How to Remove a Period Stain from a Bedsheet (Without Ruining It)

Quick answer: To remove a period stain from a bedsheet, rinse the stain in cold water first (never hot, since heat sets blood protein into the fabric), then soak it in cold water with a little salt or a stain-removing detergent before washing as usual. Acting quickly and keeping the water cold throughout is more important than any single product.

This guide covers the full process for a fresh stain, what to do if it has already dried, and how to protect bedsheets going forward.

Why hot water makes it worse

Blood contains protein, and hot water cooks that protein into the fabric fibres almost the way heat sets an egg. Once that happens, the stain becomes far harder to lift out, even with strong detergent. Cold water keeps the stain loose enough to rinse and lift away.

How to remove a fresh period stain

  1. Rinse immediately in cold water, running the stained area under a tap from the back of the fabric so the stain is pushed out rather than further into the weave.
  2. Soak the area in cold water with a tablespoon of salt, or a small amount of stain-removing detergent, for 30 minutes to a few hours depending on how set the stain is.
  3. Gently rub or scrub the stained area between your fingers or with a soft brush, checking it against the light to see how much colour remains.
  4. Wash as usual in cold or cool water with your normal detergent, then check the spot before drying — heat from a dryer or the sun can set any trace that is left.
  5. Repeat the soak and rinse if any faint mark remains, rather than moving straight to drying.

If the stain has already dried

A dried period stain takes longer but is usually still removable. Soak the fabric in cold water for several hours, or overnight, changing the water once if it becomes very discoloured. A paste of baking soda and cold water, left on the stain for 20–30 minutes before rinsing, can help lift an older mark. Avoid hot water and avoid the dryer until the stain is fully gone, since heat can lock in whatever trace is left.

What to avoid

  • Hot water or a hot wash cycle before the stain is fully out.
  • Tumble drying or ironing over a stain that has not completely lifted.
  • Chlorine bleach on coloured sheets, since it can remove colour as well as the stain; use an oxygen-based or colour-safe stain remover instead on printed or dyed fabric.

Protecting bedsheets going forward

A washable or waterproof mattress protector under the fitted sheet limits how far a stain can spread and protects the mattress itself. Keeping a spare sheet ready for a quick change, and dealing with a stain in cold water as soon as you notice it, are the two habits that make the biggest difference over time. For everyday washing, see how to wash bedsheets, and if a white sheet has turned yellow rather than stained, why white bedsheets turn yellow explains how to brighten it.

Frequently asked questions

Does salt actually help remove period stains?

Salt dissolved in cold water can help draw some blood out of fabric, especially on a fresh stain, though a dedicated stain-removing detergent is generally more effective on its own.

Can I use hydrogen peroxide on a bedsheet stain?

Diluted hydrogen peroxide can lift blood stains, but it can also lighten colour on dyed or printed fabric, so test it on a hidden corner of the sheet first, and avoid it on anything dark or heavily printed.

Will the stain definitely come out completely?

Most fresh stains come out fully if treated in cold water promptly. An older, already-dried stain that has been through a hot wash is sometimes left with a faint shadow even after treatment, but repeated cold soaks usually improve it significantly.
