Why Do Bedsheets Get Little Balls (Pilling) and Shrink?
Quick answer: Yes, cotton bed sheets do shrink, mostly in the first few washes and mostly because of hot water and high drying heat. The little balls on bedsheets are called pills: short fibres rubbed loose by friction that tangle into knots on the surface. Both can be reduced a lot with cooler washing, gentler drying and a few simple habits.
This article explains why each problem happens, how much is normal, how to fix it and what to look for when buying, so your next set stays smooth and the right size.
Do cotton bed sheets shrink?
They do. Cotton fibres are stretched during spinning and weaving. When the fabric gets wet and hot, the fibres relax and pull back towards their natural length, and the weave tightens. The result is a sheet that is slightly shorter and narrower than it was in the pack.
How much is normal varies by maker and by how the fabric was finished. Cotton that has been pre-shrunk at the factory changes very little. Untreated cotton can shrink by a few percent, roughly 2 to 5 percent in length, over its first several washes. On a flat sheet that may not be noticeable. On a fitted sheet it can mean the corners no longer reach under a thick mattress.
What makes shrinking worse
- Hot water, especially in the first washes.
- High heat in a tumble dryer, which is the biggest single cause.
- Over-drying, whether in a dryer or for many extra hours in harsh sun.
- Long, heavy wash cycles with a lot of agitation.
How to limit shrinkage
- Wash in cool or lukewarm water, around 30 to 40 degrees, for normal washes.
- Line-dry where possible, and take the sheet in as soon as it is dry.
- If you use a dryer, choose low or medium heat and remove the sheet while it is still very slightly damp.
- Gently pull the sheet back into shape while it is damp, particularly the corners and elastic of a fitted sheet.

Can you un-shrink a sheet?
Only a little. Soaking the sheet in lukewarm water with a small amount of hair conditioner or gentle fabric softener can relax the fibres enough to stretch it back slightly while damp. Pin or weigh down the edges while it dries. It will not undo major shrinkage, so prevention is far more useful.
Why do bed sheets have little balls?
Pilling starts with friction. Every night, your heels, knees and elbows rub the same parts of the sheet. That rubbing pulls the ends of short fibres out of the yarn. The loose ends twist around each other and form tiny balls that stay attached to the fabric.
Pills usually appear first where you move the most: at the foot of the bed and on your side of the bed around hip and shoulder level.
Which sheets pill most
- Polyester and poly-cotton blends. Polyester fibres are strong, so when a pill forms it holds on instead of breaking off. That is why cheaper blended sheets can look fuzzy within months.
- Brushed and microfiber sheets, which have a soft, raised surface that is easy to rough up. Our guide on microfiber versus cotton sheets compares them in more detail.
- Cotton made from short fibres, which have more loose ends to work free.
Good cotton can pill a little too, especially in its first months, but cotton pills tend to be smaller and often wash away as the fibres break off.
What makes pilling worse
- Washing sheets with towels, jeans or anything with zips and hooks.
- Overloading the machine, which increases rubbing.
- Long, harsh cycles and over-drying.
- Rough, cracked heels and untrimmed toenails, which snag the surface every night. In dry northern winters, this becomes a real factor.
- A rough mattress surface underneath the sheet.
How to remove pills from a bedsheet
- Spread the sheet flat on a bed or table so the fabric is smooth and supported.
- Use a fabric shaver (lint shaver), moving it in small circles with light pressure. This is the safest and quickest method.
- No shaver? Use a new disposable razor, held flat and pulled gently in one direction. Go slowly, because pressing too hard can cut the fabric.
- For light pilling, a clean pumice stone or a fabric comb can lift the balls off.
- Never pull pills off by hand, as this drags out more fibre and makes the area weaker and fuzzier.
How to prevent pilling
- Wash sheets only with other sheets or smooth, similar items.
- Use a normal or gentle cycle, not the heaviest one.
- Liquid detergent is slightly gentler on fabric than undissolved powder.
- Do not over-dry. Remove sheets once they are dry.
- Moisturise dry heels and trim toenails, especially in winter.
- Rotate two or three sets, so no single set takes all the wear. Our guide on how often to change and wash sheets explains a simple weekly routine.

Buying sheets that shrink and pill less
- Choose 100 percent cotton over polyester blends if pilling bothers you.
- Feel the surface. A smooth, tightly woven fabric such as percale or sateen resists pilling better than a loose or brushed one. Our bedsheet quality checklist shows what to look for.
- Allow for a little shrinkage. Measure your mattress, including its depth, and choose a fitted sheet with some room to spare. Our size and GSM guide helps with sizing.
Frequently asked questions
Do all cotton bed sheets shrink the same amount?
No. It depends on the cotton, the weave and whether the fabric was pre-shrunk. Sheets with a pre-shrink finish change very little, while untreated cotton shrinks more. Washing cool and line drying keeps any shrinkage to a minimum.
Does pilling mean my sheet is poor quality?
Heavy pilling within a few weeks usually points to a polyester blend or short-fibre cotton. A few small pills after months of use, especially where your feet rest, is normal wear and does not mean the sheet is poor.
Can pilling be stopped once it starts?
You cannot reverse it, but you can remove existing pills with a fabric shaver and slow down new ones by washing gently, not over-drying and keeping sheets away from towels and jeans.
