AC Blanket

Why an AC blanket is not just a thin quilt

For about four months of the year, most of us sleep in a room where the AC is running and the fan is on, and we still want something over us. Not a quilt, which is unbearable. Not nothing, which somehow feels wrong and also leaves you cold by 4am. Something in between.

That in-between thing is what an AC blanket is for.

The problem with using a winter blanket in summer

A winter quilt or blanket is designed to trap air. Thick batting, tight weave, sometimes a synthetic fill. Trapped air is what keeps you warm, and it works.

Run that in an air-conditioned room and you get the thing everyone complains about: you fall asleep comfortable, and at two in the morning you are too hot, so you push it off, and an hour later you are too cold, so you pull it back. Nobody sleeps well through that cycle.

The blanket is not too warm in the abstract. It is too warm because it does not let heat escape as your body temperature shifts through the night.

What makes a blanket work in an AC room

Light warmth, not heavy warmth. A good AC blanket takes the edge off the cold air without trapping heat the way a stuffed quilt does. A ribbed fleece blanket does this well: it is light in the hand, and the ribs give it texture and drape without adding bulk.

Soft against the skin. You spend the whole night under it, so the surface matters. Fleece feels soft and warm to the touch straight away, is never scratchy, and dries quickly after washing, which helps in humid weather.

Enough weight to feel present. There is a psychological part to this that is easy to dismiss. A sheet alone often does not feel like enough. A blanket with some drape to it settles over you and stays put.

What to look for

Look at weight and feel rather than thickness. The blanket should feel light in the hand but cosy on the skin, and stay soft after washing. Some people prefer cotton waffle or muslin for very hot rooms, while a soft fleece suits a room where the AC runs cold all night.

Check the size against your bed, not your mattress label. An AC blanket that only just covers the mattress will be pulled off you every time the other person turns over. A size up usually solves this. Our AC blankets are double-bed size, 200 x 240 cm (about 79 x 94 inches), which covers a double or queen mattress with room to spare. Our size and GSM guide lists the measurements if you want to compare them with your bed.

When you actually need one

In Pakistan an AC blanket is not really a summer product. It is an eight-month product. It works from March through to November, and in Karachi it works through most of the winter too. A winter quilt gets maybe six weeks of real use in most of the country.

That is worth thinking about when comparing prices. The cheaper item you use for six weeks is not the better value.

Caring for it

Cold wash, gentle cycle, mild detergent and no fabric softener. Dry in shade, and do not iron it or use high heat, since heat can flatten the soft fleece. For the full routine, see our Care guide.

Frequently asked questions

AC blanket vs razai, kambal and comforter: quick answers to what people ask most.

What is an AC blanket called in Urdu?

There isn't one exact word for it. Kambal and lihaf are common general terms for "blanket" in Urdu, and people use them loosely for an AC blanket too. Razai (or rajai) means something more specific: a stuffed winter quilt, thick with batting inside. That's a different product, built for cold, not for sleeping under AC.

Is an AC blanket the same as a comforter?

Not quite. A comforter is usually thicker and filled, closer in spirit to a light quilt than to a summer blanket. An AC blanket is thinner, has no filling, and is made to give light warmth in a cooled room. If you already own a comforter and wonder whether you still need an AC blanket, the honest answer is: probably, for the months the AC runs every night.

Is an AC blanket the same as a cooling blanket?

In Pakistan, "AC blanket" and "cooling blanket" are mostly used for the same idea: a light blanket for a cooled room, rather than a specialised cooling-gel or moisture-wicking blanket sold abroad. Some international "cooling blankets" use special fabrics marketed to actively pull heat away from the body, which is a different (and usually more expensive) product. A good cotton or fleece AC blanket does the everyday job of taking the edge off AC-cold air without needing that extra technology.

Can I use an AC blanket in winter too?

In most of the country, no, not on its own. Once the real cold sets in, you will want a proper winter quilt back on the bed. Karachi is the exception, where mild winters mean an AC blanket can work closer to year-round. Everywhere else, think of it as a March-to-November blanket, with a razai for the couple of months either side.

Our ribbed fleece AC blankets are double-bed size, 200 x 240 cm, and come in eight colours, from navy blue to off-white, at Rs 3,999 with free delivery across Pakistan.
