Beach Towel vs Bath Towel: What Is the Difference?

6 min read

Beach towels are usually bigger, thinner and brighter than bath towels. They are made to lie on, dry quickly in the open air and shake off sand. A bath towel is shorter and thicker because its main job is to absorb water after a shower. You can use one in place of the other, but each does its own job better.

This guide explains the real difference between a beach towel and a regular towel: size, thickness, fabric and feel. It also covers what to look for if you are heading to Clifton, Hawksbay, Gwadar or a hotel pool, and when a bath towel you already own will do.

Beach towels vs bath towels at a glance

Beach towel Bath towel
Main job Lying on, drying off outdoors, covering up Drying the body after a bath or shower
Typical size Commonly around 30–40 x 60–70 in Commonly around 27–30 x 52–56 in
Thickness Often thinner and lighter Often medium to thick
Surface Often velour on the printed side, or flat-woven Terry loops on both sides
Drying time Usually fast Slower, especially thick towels
Look Bold colours, stripes and prints Plain or subtle colours to match a bathroom

Sizes vary a lot by maker, so always check the listed measurements. Our guide to towel types and sizes explains bath towels, bath sheets and hand towels in more detail.

Why beach towels are bigger

A beach towel is meant to lie on. It has to fit an adult from head to feet on sand, grass or a pool lounger, so it is longer and often wider than a bath towel. Big or XL beach towels are sized so two children, or an adult with a bag, can share one.

A bath towel only has to wrap around you once. Making it much bigger would add weight and make it slower to dry on a bathroom rail.

Thin beach towels vs thick beach towels

Towel thickness is usually described by GSM (grams per square metre). Thin, lightweight beach towels, commonly in the lower GSM range, are easy to carry, pack small and dry quickly in the sun and sea breeze. Thick beach towels feel softer to lie on and absorb more, but they are heavy when wet, hold sand, and can still be damp when it's time to go home.

For most Pakistani beach trips, a thinner towel is more practical. Karachi's sea air is humid, so a heavy towel can stay damp for hours. Read what GSM means in a towel to see how weight affects drying time.

Fabric and surface: why many beach towels feel different

Velour

Many printed beach towels are velour on one side. The terry loops are sheared flat, giving a smooth, velvety surface that shows prints clearly and sheds sand easily. The trade-off is that velour absorbs less than looped terry, so these towels are better to lie on than to dry off with.

Cotton terry

Cotton beach towels with loops on both sides are the most absorbent, and they feel most like a bath towel. They pick up more sand, though.

Flat-woven and microfiber

Flat-woven cotton towels (often sold as Turkish or peshtemal towels) and microfiber travel beach towels are thin, light and very fast-drying. They fold small, which suits travel. Microfiber feels different on the skin, so some people love it and others don't.

How to choose a beach towel

  • Size: long enough to lie on. Check that it is at least as long as you are tall, or near it.
  • Weight: lighter for travel and humid coasts, and heavier only if comfort matters more than drying time.
  • Colour and print: striped, tie-dye or fruit prints such as pineapple and watermelon look cheerful, and darker colours hide sand stains. Bright prints can fade in strong sun, so shade-dry at home.
  • Personalised or custom beach towels: useful for families, so children can spot their own towel. Check that the print or embroidery is soft and not stiff against the skin.
  • Kids' beach towels: cute designs with dinosaurs or sharks help children find theirs. Hooded versions double as a cover-up after swimming.

Can you use a bath towel at the beach, or a beach towel after a shower?

Yes, both work in a pinch.

  • A bath towel at the beach absorbs well but is shorter to lie on, heavier when wet and collects sand in its loops. A larger bath sheet solves the size problem.
  • A beach towel after a shower covers you well, but a velour or very thin one will feel less absorbent and may leave you slightly damp.

For pool days, gym swims and travel, a lighter quick-drying towel is often the best middle ground. Our article on quick-dry towels explains how they work.

Caring for beach towels

  • Shake out sand before you leave the beach, and again at home before washing.
  • Rinse out salt water or pool chlorine as soon as you can, as both stiffen fibres over time.
  • Dry completely before storing. A towel packed damp in a car boot in summer will smell within a day.
  • Skip fabric softener. It reduces absorbency.
  • Shade-dry printed towels so colours last longer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between a beach towel and a regular towel?

Size and purpose. A beach towel is longer so you can lie on it, and usually thinner so it dries fast outdoors. A regular bath towel is shorter and more absorbent, made for drying off indoors.

Are beach towels less absorbent?

Often, yes, especially velour or very thin ones. A beach towel with terry loops on both sides absorbs about as well as a bath towel of the same weight.

What size is a big beach towel?

XL beach towels are commonly around 40 x 70 in or larger, but this varies by maker. Check the listed size and compare it with your own height.

Is a travel beach towel worth it?

If you travel light or visit the northern lakes or the coast often, yes. Thin microfiber or flat-woven towels fold very small and dry overnight, even in a hotel room.

A practical alternative

Home Living does not currently sell beach towels. If you need more length to wrap up in, the large towel in our 2-piece cotton towel sets measures 30 x 90, longer than a standard bath towel, and each set also includes a medium 30 x 60 towel. Being 100% cotton, it absorbs well but takes longer to dry than a thin beach towel. Sets come in six colours, including sky blue, at Rs 2,999. Questions? Message us on WhatsApp at +92 327 1336144.
