How to Wash Towels So They Stay Soft, and When to Replace Them
To wash towels so they stay soft, use a warm wash, about half the detergent you would use for clothes and no fabric softener. Shake them out well and dry them completely. Most towels last roughly 1 to 3 years, depending on how often they are used and how they are cared for. Replace them when they stay stiff, smell musty even after washing, or stop drying you properly.
Below is a simple routine that works in Pakistani homes, plus fixes for stiff, smelly or linty towels and clear signs that it is time for new ones.
How to wash towels: the basic routine
- Wash new towels before first use. New towels carry finishing agents that make them look smooth on the shelf but reduce absorbency. One or two washes remove most of it.
- Wash towels separately from clothes. Towels shed lint onto clothes, and zips, hooks and buttons can snag towel loops.
- Separate lights and darks. Dark towels such as charcoal or navy can bleed colour in the first few washes.
- Use warm water. A warm wash, around 40°C, suits most cotton towels. A hotter wash now and then helps with hygiene for whites, but always follow the care label.
- Use less detergent than you think. Too much soap does not rinse out of thick loops and leaves towels stiff. Half the usual amount is often plenty.
- Do not overload the machine. Towels need room to move so water and detergent can get through the loops.
- Skip the fabric softener. It feels soft at first but coats the fibres with a waxy layer that makes towels less absorbent and, over time, stiff.
As a general hygiene habit, many households wash bath towels after about three or four uses, as long as they dry fully between uses. In humid weather or if someone in the house is unwell, wash them more often.
Drying towels properly (the step most people rush)
How you dry a towel affects its softness as much as how you wash it.
- Shake each towel out hard a few times before hanging it. This fluffs up the loops so they do not dry flat and crunchy.
- Dry completely. A towel folded away slightly damp will smell musty within days, especially in monsoon or in Karachi's humidity.
- Sun or shade? Strong Pakistani sun dries towels fast and freshens whites, but it can fade dark colours and leave towels stiff if they bake for hours. Dry colours in shade or inside out, and bring towels in once they are dry.
- Tumble dryer: if you have one, a medium or low heat setting leaves towels softer than line-drying alone. Very high heat wears cotton faster.
- Between uses, hang bath towels spread out on a rail or line, not bunched on a hook, so air reaches the whole towel.
How to make towels soft again
If your towels have turned rough, the cause is usually build-up on the fibres, not old age. Try this reset:
- Wash the towels in warm water with about half a cup of white vinegar and no detergent. Vinegar helps loosen soap residue and minerals.
- Run a second, normal wash with a small amount of detergent and no softener.
- Shake well and dry fully, ideally with some airflow or a low tumble.
Do not add vinegar and bleach at the same time, and avoid mixing cleaning products in one wash.
Hard water makes towels stiff
Many areas in Pakistan have hard water, full of minerals that stay in the fabric and make towels feel crisp and scratchy. Using a little less detergent, adding the occasional vinegar rinse, and shaking towels well before drying all help. If your water is very hard, expect to do the reset every few weeks.
Musty or sour smell
A towel that smells even after washing usually has bacteria or mildew living deep in the loops, often because it stayed damp too long. The vinegar reset above usually fixes it. After that, focus on drying: never leave wet towels in the machine or in a heap on the floor.
What is towel lint, and why does it happen?
Towel lint is the small, fluffy bits of loose fibre that come off a towel, especially a new one. During spinning and weaving, some short cotton fibres are left loose in the loops. They work free in the first few washes and collect on your skin, in the machine filter or on other clothes.
Shedding is normal at first and should reduce after several washes. To keep it down:
- Wash new towels on their own two or three times.
- Clean the washing machine's lint filter regularly.
- Avoid over-drying on very high heat, which weakens fibres.
- If a single loop pulls out, trim it level with scissors. Never pull it, as that can unravel more loops.
Towels made with a low-twist yarn often feel softer but may shed a little longer. For more on how yarn and weave change the feel, see our guide to choosing the right towel material.
How long do towels last?
With regular use and good care, a cotton bath towel typically lasts about 1 to 3 years. Towels last longer if you have enough of them to rotate, wash them gently, skip softener and let them dry fully. They wear out faster if they are washed very hot every time, dried on high heat, or used for cleaning, make-up removal or hair dye.
Signs it is time to replace a towel
- It stays stiff or scratchy even after the vinegar reset.
- It smells musty soon after washing, even when dried properly.
- It no longer dries you well and just moves water around.
- The loops are thin or bald, the hems are coming apart, or there are holes.
- There are stains or discolouration that will not wash out.
Old towels do not have to go in the bin. Cut them into cleaning cloths, use them for washing the car, or keep one for pets.

Frequently asked questions
How long should towels last before you replace them?
Roughly 1 to 3 years is a sensible guide for bath towels in regular use. Replace them sooner if they stay smelly, rough or stop absorbing water, even after a deep clean. Having at least two towels per person to rotate helps each one last longer.
Why are my towels not absorbent any more?
The most common reason is fabric softener or detergent build-up coating the fibres. Hard water minerals add to the problem. A vinegar rinse followed by a normal wash usually brings absorbency back. Read more in our guide to what makes a towel absorbent.
Do heavier towels need different care?
Thick, high-GSM towels need more room in the machine and more time to dry, so avoid overloading and make sure they dry right through. Our explainer on towel GSM and weight covers why heavier towels dry more slowly.
Can I iron towels?
There is no need to. Ironing flattens the loops and makes towels less soft and less absorbent. A good shake and proper drying is all they need.
