Cotton, Egyptian, Turkish, Bamboo or Waffle: Which Towel Material Is Best?
For everyday bath use in Pakistan, cotton towels woven as terry cloth are the best all-round choice. They absorb well, feel soft, survive hot washes and cost less than the alternatives. Longer-staple cotton, such as genuine Egyptian or Turkish, feels smoother and lasts longer. Waffle weave, linen and flat Turkish towels dry much faster, which helps in humid weather. Bamboo is very soft but less hard-wearing.
This guide explains each material in plain terms, compares them in one table, and helps you match a towel to your climate.
First: what is terry cloth?
Terry cloth is not a fibre. It is a way of weaving. Extra yarn is pulled up into small loops on both sides of the fabric. Those loops give the towel a huge surface area, so it can grab and hold water. Almost every fluffy bath towel you have used is a terry towel.
So when you read "terry cloth towel" or "terry cloths", think "looped towel". The fibre inside the loops can be cotton, bamboo viscose, polyester or a blend. The fibre and the weave together decide how the towel feels and performs.
Are towels made of cotton?
Most bath towels are, fully or partly. Towels are not usually wool: wool absorbs slowly and does not handle frequent hot washing well. Cheaper towels often blend cotton with polyester, which lowers the price and speeds drying but reduces absorbency. The label should tell you the blend.
Cotton towels: the everyday standard
Cotton is a natural fibre that soaks up water readily, stays soft against the skin and can be washed hot to remove oils and bacteria. That combination is why 100% cotton towels remain the default in homes and hotels.
Not all cotton is the same, though. You will see these labels:
- 100% cotton: no synthetic blend. Good absorbency, but the cotton quality itself can vary a lot.
- Combed cotton: the short, weak fibres are combed out before spinning, giving a smoother yarn that sheds less.
- Ring-spun cotton: fibres twisted tightly into a fine, strong yarn. Durable and soft.
- Zero-twist or low-twist cotton: very loosely twisted yarn that feels extra fluffy, but can shed and wear faster.
Pakistan grows and weaves a great deal of cotton, so good cotton towels are widely available here at fair prices.
Egyptian and Turkish cotton
Both names refer to long-staple cotton, meaning each fibre is longer than average. Longer fibres spin into smoother, stronger yarn with fewer loose ends, so the towel stays soft and pills less over time.
- Egyptian cotton bath towels are usually thick and very absorbent. They feel plush but take longer to dry, which matters in Karachi or during the monsoon.
- Turkish cotton towels are usually a little lighter and dry faster, while still feeling smooth and soft.
A word of caution: these labels are not always policed. "Egyptian cotton" on a cheap towel may mean only a small share of Egyptian fibre, or none at all. Judge the towel by feel, weight and finishing, not the label alone.
Turkish towels (peshtemal) and Turkish blankets
"Turkish towel" can also mean a completely different product: a thin, flat-woven cotton towel, often striped with tassels, called a peshtemal. It is not terry. It absorbs less per pass, but it is light, packs small and dries in a fraction of the time. The same flat weave is also sold as a Turkish blanket or throw.
Micro cotton
Micro cotton is a name used for towels made from very fine, long cotton yarns. The result is a light towel that feels exceptionally soft and fluffy. Despite the name, it is still cotton. It is not microfiber, which is a synthetic fabric. If you are comparing the two, our guide to microfiber vs cotton towels explains the real differences.
Bamboo towels
Bamboo towels are usually made from bamboo viscose (also labelled rayon from bamboo), often blended with cotton. They feel silky and very soft, drape nicely and absorb well.
The trade-offs: viscose fibres are weaker when wet, so bamboo towels can wear faster with rough washing, and they tend to dry more slowly than cotton of the same weight. They suit people who value softness above everything and are happy to wash gently.
Waffle weave towels
A waffle weave, or waffle cloth, has a raised grid of small square pockets, like a honeycomb. There are no loops, so the towel is flat and light. Water collects in the pockets, and the thin fabric dries fast.
What is a waffle towel good for? Humid bathrooms, travel, the gym, and hair, because the smooth surface causes less friction than terry. It feels lighter and less cosy than a plush towel, and it gets softer with washing. If a towel that dries fast is your main goal, our article on quick-dry towels covers the options.
Linen towels
Linen comes from flax. It absorbs water well, dries very quickly, which helps it stay fresher between washes, and becomes softer with every wash. New linen can feel crisp or rough at first, and it is usually expensive. It is a strong choice for humid weather if you do not need a fluffy feel.
Jacquard towels
What is a jacquard towel? Jacquard is a weaving method, not a fibre. The pattern, whether a border, a logo or a floral design, is woven into the towel instead of printed on top. So it does not fade or crack. Jacquard towels are usually cotton terry with a patterned band.
Towel materials compared
| Material | Feel | Absorbency | Drying speed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton terry | Soft, cosy | High | Medium | Everyday bath towels |
| Egyptian cotton terry | Plush, smooth | Very high | Slow | Dry winters, luxury feel |
| Turkish cotton terry | Smooth, lighter | High | Medium to fast | All-year use |
| Flat Turkish (peshtemal) | Thin, flat | Medium | Very fast | Travel, beach, humid homes |
| Micro cotton | Very soft, light | High | Medium | Soft feel without heavy weight |
| Bamboo viscose | Silky | High | Slow | Sensitive skin, gentle washing |
| Waffle weave | Light, textured | Medium to high | Fast | Humidity, hair, travel |
| Linen | Crisp, softens over time | High | Very fast | Hot, humid weather |
Absorbency also depends on weight, loop density and how the towel is washed. For more on that, read which towels are most absorbent.
Which towel material suits Pakistani weather?
- Humid coast and monsoon season: choose lighter cotton terry, waffle, linen or a flat Turkish towel. Thick Egyptian-style towels may stay damp and smell.
- Hot, dry summers in Punjab and interior Sindh: almost any cotton works, because towels dry quickly in the heat. A mid-weight cotton terry gives the best balance.
- Cold northern winters: a thicker cotton or Egyptian cotton towel feels warmer and more comforting, as long as you can air it indoors.
- Load-shedding and no dryer: lighter towels matter more, because they dry on a line or airer without help.

Frequently asked questions
What towel material is best overall?
For most homes, 100% cotton terry is best overall. It balances absorbency, softness, durability and price better than any other material. Choose longer-staple cotton if you want a smoother feel that lasts.
Are 100% cotton bath towels better than blends?
For drying your body, usually yes. Pure cotton absorbs more and feels softer. Cotton-polyester blends dry faster and cost less, which can suit gym or guest towels.
Is a waffle towel good for hair?
Many people find it is. The flat, smooth weave causes less friction than looped terry, and it soaks up water without being heavy on the head. A soft, lightweight cotton towel used by blotting works well too.
How do I care for cotton towels?
Wash new towels once on their own, skip fabric softener because it coats the loops, and shade-dry where possible to protect the colour. If towels turn stiff or musty, run one wash with half a cup of white vinegar and no detergent, then wash normally. Our care guide has the details.
