Microfiber vs Cotton Towels: Which Is Better for Skin, Hair and Everyday Use?

Microfiber towels are light, thin and dry very fast, which makes them great for the gym, travel, the beach and for gently drying hair. Cotton towels feel softer and more natural on the body, breathe better and are the more comfortable choice for everyday bathing. Many homes end up with both: cotton for the bathroom, microfiber for the bag.

A quick, honest note first: Home Living sells cotton towels only. We do not sell microfiber towels. This guide simply explains how the two compare so you can pick what suits you.

What is a microfiber towel?

Microfiber is a synthetic fabric, usually a mix of polyester and polyamide (nylon). The fibres are extremely fine, far thinner than a strand of cotton, and are often split during manufacture. That creates a huge amount of surface area, so a microfibre towel pulls water off the skin quickly even though it is thin.

Because the fabric is thin and synthetic, it also releases water fast. That is why microfiber drying towels are popular for travel and sport: they can dry in a few hours even in a gym bag.

What is a cotton towel?

Most cotton bath towels are woven as terry, with small loops of cotton yarn that soak up water. Cotton is a natural plant fibre. It absorbs a lot, breathes well and feels soft and familiar on the skin, especially after a few washes.

The trade-off is weight and drying time. A thick cotton towel holds more water and needs more time and airflow to dry. For a deeper look at cotton types and weaves, see our guide to choosing a towel material.

Microfiber vs cotton towels side by side

Point Microfiber Cotton
Feel Thin, smooth, can feel slightly "grippy" on dry skin Soft, fluffy, familiar
Absorbs Quickly, for its weight A lot, especially thicker towels
Drying speed Very fast Slower, depends on weight
Weight and packing Very light, folds small Heavier and bulkier
Breathability Lower (synthetic) Higher (natural fibre)
Smell over time Can hold body odour if not washed well Can go musty if left damp
Care No fabric softener, wash apart from lint-shedding cotton No fabric softener, dry fully

Is a microfiber towel good for hair?

For many people, yes. A microfiber hair towel is smooth and light, so it presses water out without the rough rubbing and weight of a big terry bath towel. That is why microfiber towels for curly hair are popular: less friction can mean less frizz.

But microfiber is not the only gentle option. A soft, smooth cotton hand towel or an old cotton T-shirt, used by pressing and squeezing rather than rubbing, works on a similar idea. Our guide on the best towel for drying hair covers technique, wrapping and curls in more detail.

Is a microfiber towel good for skin and face?

Generally, a clean microfiber face towel is fine for most skin. Some people with dry or sensitive skin find it drags slightly, because the fine fibres catch on tiny rough patches. Cotton tends to feel gentler for drying the face, while microfiber cloths are often used for removing makeup.

Whichever you use, the bigger factors are keeping the towel clean, using a separate towel for the face, and patting rather than rubbing. If you have a rash or irritation that does not settle, please see a doctor or dermatologist.

Which is better for bath, gym, travel and beach?

Everyday bathing

Cotton wins for most people. Microfiber bath towels do the job, but many find them less cosy for drying the whole body at home. Cotton also breathes better in Pakistan's long, hot summers.

Gym and sport

A microfiber gym towel is light, dries fast and does not take much bag space. A thin cotton towel works too if you wash it after each session. See our guide to gym and sports towels.

Travel and beach

A microfibre travel towel or beach towel packs small and dries quickly, which is handy on a trip north or to the coast. Sand can stick to it more than you might expect, so shake it out well.

Humid homes

In humid Karachi or during monsoon, the drying speed of microfiber is a real plus. If you prefer cotton, a lighter, quick-drying cotton towel is the middle ground. Our article on quick-dry towels explains how they work.

How to care for each

  • Microfiber: wash in warm water with a little detergent, no fabric softener and no bleach. Wash it apart from cotton towels, which shed lint that sticks to microfiber. Air dry or tumble on low heat.
  • Cotton: wash warm, skip fabric softener, and dry fully in the sun or a breezy spot. A vinegar rinse now and then helps with musty smells.

The same fibre comparison applies to bedding, which we cover in microfiber vs cotton bedsheets.

Frequently asked questions

Which microfiber towel is best for hair?

Look for one that feels smooth rather than fluffy, is light enough to wrap without pulling on the neck, and has a loop or button if you like to twist it up. Any microfiber cloth that is soft and clean will do the basic job.

Are microfiber towels good for the body?

They dry you well and are practical for sport and travel. For daily bathing at home, most people find cotton softer and more comfortable.

Why does my microfiber towel smell?

Synthetic fibres can trap body oils, and fabric softener makes it worse. Wash it more often, skip softener, and make sure it dries completely.

Do microfiber towels shed?

They shed tiny synthetic fibres in the wash rather than visible lint. Cotton towels shed visible lint at first, which settles after a few washes.
