Should You Wash a New Bedsheet Before Using It?
Quick answer: Yes, you can use a new bedsheet without washing it, and for most people nothing bad will happen. Even so, we recommend one wash before first use. It removes factory finishes, loose dye and the dust a sheet picks up in storage and transit, and it makes cotton noticeably softer.
There is one important exception: check that the sheet fits your mattress before you wash it. Once a sheet has been washed it counts as used, so it can no longer be exchanged. More on that below.
Can I use a new bedsheet without washing it?
You can. A new sheet from a sealed pack is not dirty in the everyday sense, and plenty of people put a new set straight on the bed for a wedding, guests or Eid without any problem.
The reason people advise washing first is not that new sheets are dangerous. It is that they carry things you do not want against your skin for eight hours a night, and one wash removes most of them. Think of it as the same logic as washing a new shirt or a new baby suit before wearing it.
What is on a brand-new sheet?
A sheet goes through spinning, weaving, dyeing, printing, finishing, stitching, folding and packing before it reaches you. Along the way it can pick up:
- Finishing agents: many fabrics are treated with softeners or stiffening finishes so they look crisp and flat in the pack. These wash out, which is why a new sheet can feel oddly stiff or slippery and then change after its first wash.
- Excess dye: deep colours, strong prints and dark stripes can release some loose dye in the first one or two washes. This is normal and usually stops quickly.
- Lint and loose fibres: short fibres from cutting and stitching sit on the surface and can leave fluff on your clothes and pillow.
- Dust and handling: sheets are handled, folded and stored in warehouses and shops, and in our climate dust gets into almost everything.
- Packing creases and smell: tight folding leaves sharp lines, and some packs have a faint packaging smell.
Who should always wash first
For some people and situations, washing before use is not optional, it is the sensible choice:
- Babies and young children, whose skin is more delicate.
- Anyone with sensitive skin, eczema or known allergies. Finishes and dyes are common triggers for irritation. Our guide on whether bedsheets can cause allergies or hives explains what to watch for, and a doctor or dermatologist should check any rash that keeps coming back.
- Dark or strongly coloured sets, such as deep green, navy or bold prints, so any loose dye comes out in the machine and not on a white pillow or your skin in a sweaty summer night.
- Sheets that have been stored for a long time, for example a set kept in a trunk since a jahez or bought on sale months ago.
Do you have to wash bed sheets before using them if you are short of time?
If guests are arriving tonight and there is no time for a wash and dry, it is fine to use the set as it is. To make it more pleasant:
- Unfold it and shake it out well outside or on a balcony to remove lint and dust.
- Hang it in fresh air for an hour or two so any packing smell fades.
- Iron it to remove the fold lines.
- Wash it after the first use and before the next one.
Check the fit before the first wash
This is the step most people skip. Before washing, open the pack, spread the sheet on your bed and check:
- It covers the mattress with enough to tuck in on all sides, or the fitted corners reach under the mattress.
- The pillow covers fit your pillows.
- The colour and design are what you expected.
Put it back in its original packing if it is wrong. Home Living offers a 7-day exchange on unused items in their original packing, and a washed sheet no longer qualifies. The details are on our returns and exchange page. If you are unsure of sizes, measure your mattress width, length and depth and message us.
How to give a new sheet its first wash
The first wash is gentler than a normal weekly wash. You are trying to rinse out finishes and loose dye, not scrub out dirt.
- Wash it on its own, or with similar colours. Keep a new deep green or navy set away from whites for at least the first two washes.
- Use cool or lukewarm water. Cold to about 30 degrees is safest for colour. Hot water on the first wash increases both dye loss and shrinkage.
- Use a little less detergent than usual, and no bleach. A mild liquid or a small scoop of powder is enough.
- Add an extra rinse if your machine allows it. In hard-water areas this helps flush out finishes and detergent together.
- Dry colours in the shade, and take them in as soon as they are dry. White cotton can go in the sun.
Expect a small amount of shrinkage the first time. Cotton relaxes and tightens in its first few washes, which is why it helps to measure first. Our article on why bedsheets shrink and pill explains how much is normal and how to limit it. For routine washing after that, see how to wash bedsheets.
What if you are gifting the sheet?
Do not wash a sheet you plan to give as a gift or pack in a jahez trunk. The person receiving it expects it sealed and in its packing, and they may need to exchange it for a different size. Simply let them know it is a good idea to wash it once before use.
Frequently asked questions
Is it unhygienic to sleep on new sheets without washing?
Not usually. A sheet from a sealed pack is not dirty in the way a used sheet is. The main reasons to wash are comfort and skin sensitivity: it removes finishes, lint and dust, and softens the fabric.
Why does my new bedsheet feel stiff or rough?
Many new sheets carry a finish that keeps them crisp in the pack. Cotton also feels firmer before its fibres relax. One or two washes normally make it softer, and the feel keeps improving over the first month of use.
Will a new coloured sheet bleed on my other clothes?
Dark and bright colours can release some loose dye early on. Wash them separately in cool water for the first couple of washes. If the rinse water is clear by the third wash, you can wash it with similar colours after that.
Should I wash new pillow covers too?
Yes, wash them with the sheet. Your face is in direct contact with the pillow cover all night, so it is the piece where finishes and lint matter most.
