What Is a Fitted (Elastic) Bedsheet and Do You Need One?
Quick answer: What is a fitted bedsheet? It is a bottom sheet with elastic sewn into its edge and stitched box-shaped corners, so it grips the mattress like a shower cap instead of being tucked in. In Pakistan it is often called an “elastic bedsheet”. You need one if you want a sheet that stays smooth all night with no tucking.
Fitted sheets are not better for everyone, though. Below we explain how they are made, how they compare with a flat sheet, who benefits most, and what to check before you buy one.
What is a fitted bedsheet? How it is made
A flat sheet is simply a large rectangle of fabric with hemmed edges. A fitted sheet starts the same way, but the maker adds two things.
- Corner pockets: a square is cut or folded out of each corner and stitched, so each corner forms a box shape that wraps over the mattress corner.
- Elastic edge: elastic, sometimes called garter locally, is sewn into the hem either all the way around or just at the corners. It pulls the edges under the mattress.
The height of those pockets is called the depth, and it has to match how thick your mattress is. A sheet with shallow pockets will keep popping off a thick mattress. We explain this fully in bedsheet depth explained.
Fitted vs flat bedsheet
| Fitted (elastic) sheet | Flat sheet | |
|---|---|---|
| How it stays on | Elastic grips the mattress | Tucked under the mattress |
| Size needed | Must match mattress size and depth closely | Larger than the mattress; more forgiving |
| Making the bed | Fast, stays smooth | Needs tucking, may loosen overnight |
| Folding and ironing | Harder to fold neatly | Easy to fold and iron |
| Other uses | Bottom sheet only | Can be used as a top sheet, picnic cover or light summer cover |
Who should use a fitted sheet?
A fitted sheet makes the most sense in these situations:
- Restless sleepers whose flat sheet ends up in a heap by morning.
- Children's beds, where kids jump, roll and pull at the bedding.
- Thick or heavy mattresses that are hard to lift for tucking.
- Floor mattresses and gaddas used for guests at Eid or weddings, where there is nothing to tuck the sheet under.
- Elderly family members who find tucking tiring.
- Hot, sticky nights in Karachi humidity or the monsoon, when a loose sheet sticks to skin and bunches up.
A flat sheet may suit you better if your mattress is an unusual size, if you like changing a bed quickly between different beds, or if you prefer crisp, ironed sheets. If your flat sheet keeps slipping, our guide on keeping a bedsheet in place shows tucking tricks and how a tailor can convert it to elastic.
Is 1 fitted sheet enough?
Bedsheet sets in Pakistan usually include one bottom sheet and pillow covers. When a set includes 1 fitted sheet, that sheet covers the mattress, and you would then add a blanket, razai or AC blanket on top as your cover.
For regular use, one fitted sheet is not enough on its own, because you need a spare while one is in the wash. Many households keep at least two sheets per bed so the bed is never bare on laundry day. What each set contains varies by seller, so check the product page before ordering. Ours, for example, is 1 fitted sheet plus 2 pillow covers.
What to check before buying a fitted sheet
- Mattress size: measure width and length. Unlike a flat sheet, a fitted sheet cannot be a “roughly” right size. Our size and GSM guide shows how to measure.
- Depth: measure your mattress thickness, including any topper, and look for a pocket at least an inch or two deeper.
- Elastic type: elastic all the way around holds better than elastic only at the corners.
- Stitching: look for neat, double-stitched corners, since these take the most strain.
- Fabric: cotton breathes well in Pakistani summers. Remember that 100% cotton can shrink a little on the first washes, so a sheet that is already tight may become too tight.
Caring for elastic sheets
Elastic weakens with high heat over time. Wash in cool or warm water rather than very hot, and avoid leaving the sheet drying in harsh midday sun for hours, which can also fade colours. Our care and washing guide covers the basics.
Fitted sheets are awkward to fold, but it gets easy with practice. See how to fold a fitted bedsheet in five steps.
Frequently asked questions
What do people in Pakistan call a fitted sheet?
It is most often called an “elastic bedsheet” or “fitted sheet”. Some people also call it a garter sheet, after the elastic edge.
Can a fitted sheet go on any mattress?
Only on a mattress of the size and depth it was made for. A few inches of difference in width can make it too loose or impossible to stretch on.
Do I still need a flat sheet with a fitted sheet?
No, not in most Pakistani homes. People usually put a blanket, razai or AC blanket straight on top. Some people like a flat top sheet for hygiene, since it is easier to wash than a heavy quilt.
Why does my fitted sheet keep coming off?
The most common reason is that the pocket is too shallow for the mattress. Tired elastic and a sheet that shrank in the wash are the other usual causes.
