Bedsheet Depth Explained: How Deep Should a Fitted Sheet Be?
Quick answer: What does bedsheet depth mean? It is how tall the corner pockets of a fitted sheet are, which tells you how thick a mattress the sheet can wrap around. As a rule, choose a pocket depth that is about 1–3 inches more than your mattress thickness, so the elastic can tuck underneath and hold.
Depth is the measurement most people skip, and it is the main reason a fitted sheet pops off at the corners. Here is how to measure it, how to match it, and what goes wrong when it is too shallow or too deep.
What does bedsheet depth mean, exactly?
Every mattress has three measurements: width, length and depth. Depth is the thickness, from the bottom edge to the top surface. A fitted sheet has a matching measurement, usually called pocket depth: the height of the stitched corner box that wraps over the mattress corner.
Width and length tell you whether a sheet covers the top. Depth tells you whether it reaches down the sides and far enough underneath for the elastic to grip. A sheet can be the right width and length and still fail because its pockets are too short.
If you are new to elastic sheets, start with our guide on what a fitted bedsheet is and when you need one.
How to measure your mattress depth
- Strip the bed so you are measuring the bare mattress, not the old sheet.
- Put the tape at the bottom seam on one side of the mattress.
- Measure straight up to the highest point of the top surface. On a pillow-top or quilted mattress, measure to the top of the padding.
- Add any extras that stay on the bed: a foam topper, a thick mattress protector, or a winter underlay.
- Check a second spot. Older mattresses sag in the middle, so measure near a corner, where the sheet actually has to fit.
Write the number down in inches. That figure, plus your width and length, is everything you need. For width and length ranges by bed size, see our bedsheet size guide for Pakistan.
How deep should a fitted sheet be?
Mattress thickness varies a lot between makers. As a rough guide only, thin foam mattresses are often around 4–6 inches, many medium foam and spring mattresses fall around 6–10 inches, and thicker spring or pillow-top mattresses can go beyond that. Use your own measurement, not these ranges.
| Your mattress depth (with topper) | Pocket depth to look for |
|---|---|
| Up to 6 in | about 7–9 in |
| 6–8 in | about 9–11 in |
| 8–10 in | about 11–13 in |
| Over 10 in | mattress depth plus 2–3 in; often custom or “deep pocket” |
The extra 1–3 inches is what lets the elastic curl under the mattress. Without it, the elastic sits on the side edge and slips up every time you move.
What goes wrong when the depth is off
Pockets too shallow
- You struggle to stretch the last corner on.
- Corners pop off during the night, usually the one you sleep nearest.
- The sheet pulls so tight that seams and elastic wear out early.
- The mattress edges show at the sides.
Pockets too deep
- Loose fabric gathers under the mattress and wrinkles on top.
- The sheet shifts and bunches when you turn over.
A slightly deep pocket is easier to live with than a shallow one. You can fold the spare fabric under, or use sheet straps to pull it snug. Our article on how to keep a bedsheet in place covers those fixes.
Depth matters for flat sheets too
Flat sheets do not have pockets, but mattress depth still decides how big the sheet must be. The fabric has to run down both sides before you can tuck it in. A simple way to check:
- Width needed = mattress width + (2 x depth) + about 12–16 inches for tucking.
So a 60-inch-wide mattress that is 10 inches deep needs a flat sheet about 92–96 inches wide. A 6-inch mattress of the same width only needs about 84–88 inches. Deep mattresses and thin flat sheets are a common mismatch.
Pakistani homes: toppers, seasons and shrinkage
A few local habits change your depth without you noticing:
- Winter layers: in Islamabad, Quetta and the north, many families add a thick underlay or foam topper for the cold months. That can add 1–3 inches, so a sheet that fits in summer may not fit in December.
- Cotton shrinkage: 100% cotton can shrink a little over the first few washes, and pocket depth can shrink along with the rest. A pocket that is exactly your mattress depth may end up short.
- Floor gaddas for guests: thin floor mattresses at Eid or family events usually need shallow pockets. A deep sheet on them will look baggy.
Frequently asked questions
Is bedsheet depth the same as mattress depth?
Not quite. Mattress depth is how thick the mattress is. Sheet or pocket depth is how much mattress the sheet can cover, and it should be a little larger than the mattress depth.
What is a deep pocket fitted sheet?
It is a fitted sheet made with taller corner pockets for thick mattresses, typically beyond 10–12 inches. Exact figures vary by maker, so always compare the listed pocket depth with your own measurement.
Where do I find the depth of a bedsheet?
Good sellers list it on the product page or packaging along with width and length. If it is missing, ask the seller before buying.
