Best Towel for Drying Hair: Cotton vs Microfiber, and How to Towel-Dry Without Damage
The best towel for drying hair is a smooth, light one: a microfiber hair towel, a soft cotton hand towel or even an old cotton T-shirt. How you use it matters more than which one you pick. Press and squeeze the water out instead of rubbing, and do not leave a heavy, twisted towel on your head for long.
Home Living does not sell special hair towels. This guide explains, honestly, what works and why, so you can use what you already have or choose well.
Is towel drying bad for hair?
Towel drying itself is not the problem. Rough towel drying is. Hair is more fragile when wet, and rubbing it hard with a thick, loopy towel creates friction that can rough up the outer layer of each strand. The result is often frizz, tangles and, over time, more breakage.
Weight matters too. A big bath towel full of water, twisted tightly and pulled up into a turban, tugs on the hairline and roots. Gentle pressure with a lighter towel avoids most of this.
The best towel for drying hair: which towel is good for hair?
| Option | Why it helps | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Microfiber hair towel | Smooth, light, absorbs fast | Can feel grippy; skip fabric softener |
| Soft cotton hand towel | Lighter than a bath towel, easy to wash often | Press, do not rub |
| Cotton T-shirt | Very smooth, almost no friction | Absorbs less, so it takes a little longer |
| Waffle or thin cotton towel | Light, dries fast between uses | Texture varies, so choose a soft one |
| Thick bath towel | Absorbs a lot | Heavy when wet; loops can snag long or curly hair |
Many people like microfiber for hair, and for good reason. We compare it fully in microfiber vs cotton towels. If you prefer natural fibre, a soft cotton hand towel is a genuinely good alternative, and most homes already have one.
How to towel dry your hair without damage
- Squeeze first. In the shower, gently squeeze water out of your hair with your hands, from the ends up.
- Blot, don't rub. Wrap a section of hair in the towel and press or squeeze. Move down the length rather than scrubbing back and forth.
- Be extra gentle on the ends. They are the oldest, driest part of the hair and tangle easily.
- Stop at damp. Aim for hair that is no longer dripping, then let it air dry or use a dryer on a moderate setting.
- Detangle carefully. Use a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends.
What does towel-dried hair mean?
When a shampoo or serum says "apply to towel-dried hair", it means hair that has been blotted until it is damp but not dripping. That way the product is not diluted by excess water.
How to wrap a towel on your head
A towel wrap keeps water off your clothes while you get ready. To do it without pulling:
- Bend forward so your hair hangs down.
- Place the long edge of a light towel at the nape of your neck.
- Bring both sides together over your forehead and twist the towel loosely, not tightly.
- Stand up and flip the twisted end back over your head. Tuck it in at the nape.
Keep the wrap on for a short while, then take it off and let the hair breathe. A hand-towel size wrap is lighter on the neck than a full bath towel. People with thick, long hair may need a slightly bigger towel, but still one that is not too heavy.
Curly hair: towel scrunches and towel curls
If you have curls or waves, the gentler the better. Two terms you may have seen:
- Towel scrunching: after applying your styling product, cup the curls in a soft towel or T-shirt and squeeze upward towards the scalp. This removes water and encourages the curl pattern.
- Towel curls: a heatless styling method where damp hair is wrapped around a rolled-up towel or cloth and left to set, then released into loose waves.
A curly hair towel just needs to be smooth and light. Thick terry loops can separate curl clumps and cause frizz, which is why many people with curls use microfiber or a cotton T-shirt.
What is a towel scrunchie?
It is a hair tie covered in soft towel fabric. You use it to tie up damp hair; it absorbs a little moisture and usually leaves less of a dent than a tight elastic.
Keep your hair towel clean
A towel used on hair picks up oil, product and moisture. Keep a separate towel for hair if you can, hang it to dry fully after each use, and wash it every few uses. Avoid fabric softener, which coats the fibres and makes them absorb less. Our guide on washing towels so they stay soft has more tips, and the care guide covers the basics.
If you have a persistent itchy or flaky scalp, a towel change is unlikely to fix it. Please see a doctor or dermatologist.
Frequently asked questions
Which hair towel is best?
The best one is smooth, light and absorbent, and you use it gently. A microfiber hair towel, a soft cotton hand towel or a cotton T-shirt all work well. There is no need to buy a costly branded one to get good results.
What towel should I use for hair: cotton or microfiber?
Microfiber dries hair a little faster and is very smooth. Soft cotton is more breathable and easy to wash often. Both are fine if you press rather than rub.
Can I use my bath towel for my hair?
You can, but a bath towel is heavy when wet and its loops can rough up hair. If you use one, blot gently and avoid twisting it into a tight turban. For choosing an everyday body towel, see our bath towel buying guide.
How long should I keep a towel wrap on?
Only as long as you need to get ready. Leaving hair wrapped in a damp towel for hours keeps the scalp wet and warm, which is not ideal.
For drying off after a bath, our 2-piece cotton bath towel set has a medium towel (30 x 60) and a large towel (30 x 90) in 100% cotton; blot your hair gently with the medium one rather than twisting it into a tight turban.
