What Towels Do Hotels Use? How to Get the Hotel Towel Feel at Home

6 min read
White hotel-style towels rolled and stacked on bathroom shelves

Most hotels use white, 100% cotton terry towels of medium to heavy weight, with a plain woven border and strong double-stitched hems. White cotton can be washed hot and bleached again and again, so it stays hygienic and looks the same in every room. You can get much of that hotel towel feel at home with the right cotton towel and a few laundry habits.

Below we explain what hotel towels are made of, why they are nearly always white, what a hotel towel set includes, and how to recreate the look and feel in your own bathroom.

What towels do hotels use? The short breakdown

  • Fibre: usually 100% cotton, sometimes a cotton-polyester blend in budget hotels, where a little polyester helps towels survive industrial washing.
  • Weave: terry loops on both faces, often with a flat dobby border near each end.
  • Weight: hotel bath towels are commonly in the mid-to-heavy range, often somewhere around 500–700 GSM, though this varies by hotel. Budget hotels go lighter, and luxury hotels and spas go heavier.
  • Colour: white, almost always.
  • Construction: tight, even loops and reinforced hems, so the towels survive hundreds of commercial washes.

Hotel towels are chosen for durability and easy laundering first, and softness second. That is a useful lesson for home buyers too.

Why hotel towels are white

Hotels choose white towels for practical reasons, not just style:

  • They can be sanitised. White cotton handles hot water and bleach, which would strip colour from dyed towels.
  • They look clean. Guests can see at a glance that a white towel is fresh.
  • No colour matching. Every white towel matches every other, so the laundry doesn't need to sort sets by room or colour, and a replacement never looks different.
  • A calm, spa-like look. White suits any bathroom design.

Hotel bedding follows the same logic. See what bedsheets hotels use for how the same thinking applies to the bed.

Some boutique hotels use grey and white towels, or blue and white towels with a coloured border, for a touch of style. Black and white towels are rare in hotels, because dark towels fade under commercial washing and show bleach marks.

What a hotel towel set includes

Towel Typical size (varies by maker) Used for
Bath towel around 27–30 x 52–56 in Drying the body after a shower
Bath sheet (upscale hotels) around 35–40 x 60–70 in A full wrap-around towel
Hand towel around 16–18 x 28–30 in Hands and face at the basin
Face towel or washcloth around 12–13 x 12–13 in Washing and wiping the face
Bath mat varies Standing on after a shower

Hotels usually give one full set per guest and replace used towels daily or on request. Spa towels follow the same pattern, but spas use many more hand-size and bath-size towels, often white or soft neutrals, and change them after every client.

How to get the hotel towel feel at home

1. Choose the right towel

Look for pure cotton, even loops, a neat woven border and double-stitched hems. Hotel quality towels feel substantial but not stiff. For more on what separates a good towel from a poor one, see our bath towel buying guide. If you are weighing cotton against other fibres, this material comparison will help.

2. Don't chase the heaviest towel

Hotels have commercial dryers, but most Pakistani homes dry towels on a line. A very heavy towel can stay damp for hours in Karachi's humidity or during the monsoon, and it starts to smell. A mid-weight cotton towel gives you the soft feel without the musty problem.

3. Wash like a hotel, minus the harsh chemicals

  • Wash new towels once before first use to remove loose lint.
  • Don't use fabric softener. It makes towels feel slippery and less absorbent, and many hotels skip it on towels for the same reason.
  • Use the right amount of detergent. Too much leaves a residue that makes towels stiff.
  • If towels turn stiff or musty, wash once with half a cup of white vinegar and no detergent, then wash normally.
  • Dry in shade with airflow, then give each towel a good shake to fluff the loops.

4. Keep enough towels to rotate

A hotel never hands a guest a damp towel. At home, two or three bath towels per person let each one dry fully and rest between washes. The towels last longer and always feel fresh.

5. Fold and display them the hotel way

Presentation is half the hotel look. A tri-fold on the shelf, rolled hand towels in a basket and a neat drape on the bar make even simple towels look expensive. We show each fold step by step in how to fold and hang towels like a hotel.

Are white towels a good idea at home?

White towels look beautiful but need more care at home than in a hotel. They show makeup, haldi and hard-water rust stains, and they can yellow if washed in cool water with too much detergent. If you want the hotel look with less upkeep, off-white shades like ivory give a similar calm, clean effect while hiding small marks better.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy hotel towels for home?

Some suppliers sell hotel towels for sale to the public, often in bulk packs meant for guesthouses. They are durable but sometimes stiffer than home towels, because they are built for industrial washing. A good cotton towel made for home use often feels softer.

Why do hotel towels feel so fluffy?

Hotels usually tumble-dry towels, which lifts and separates the loops, and many skip fabric softener on them. At home, shaking towels well before and after line-drying, and skipping softener, gets you close.

Is it worth buying white towels in bulk?

Buying several white towels at once makes rotation and replacement easy, because every towel matches. Just be ready to wash whites separately and treat stains quickly.

What is the difference between hotel towels and spa towels?

They are very similar. Spa towels are often a little lighter and come in more hand-size pieces, because a spa uses many towels per client and washes them constantly.
