Which Towel Is Best for Your Face and Skin? (And Should It Be Separate?)

The best face towel is a small, soft, absorbent towel that you use only on your face and wash often. And yes, it is worth keeping it separate from your bath towel. It only touches freshly washed skin, it dries quickly, and it is easy to change every day or two, which makes it the cleaner habit.

Below we cover what makes a towel good for the face, how often to change it, and how to dry your face gently. This is general hygiene advice, not medical advice.

Should I use a separate towel for my face?

For most people, yes. A bath towel dries your whole body, feet included, and then usually hangs damp in the bathroom for hours. Pressing that same towel on your face after a careful face wash undoes some of the effort.

Keeping a separate one has three practical benefits:

  • It stays cleaner. It only touches skin you have just washed.
  • It dries fast. A small towel dries between uses, which matters in a humid Karachi summer or during the monsoon, when big towels can stay damp all day.
  • It is easy to wash often. You can change a small towel daily without adding much to your laundry.

If you really prefer using one towel, at least dry your face first, while the towel is at its cleanest, and then move on to your body.

Which towel is good for the face?

A good towel for your face is soft, absorbent, and small enough that you will actually wash it often. Here is what to look for.

Material: soft and absorbent

Cotton terry is the usual choice because its loops soak up water with light pressure, so you do not need to rub. It is breathable and easy to wash warm. Longer-fibre cottons tend to stay softer and shed less. Our guide to which towel material is best compares cotton with Egyptian, Turkish, bamboo and waffle towels.

Microfiber face cloths are popular for removing makeup and they dry quickly, but some people find them grabby on dry or sensitive skin. We weigh up both in microfiber vs cotton towels.

Size

A face towel or washcloth is commonly around 12 to 13 inches square, though sizes vary by maker. Many people prefer a hand towel, commonly around 16 to 18 x 28 to 30 inches, because it also covers the neck and hairline. Either works. Choose the size you will wash most often.

Weight

A light to mid-weight towel is ideal. Very thick towels feel luxurious but take much longer to dry, and a towel that stays damp all day is exactly what you want to avoid. Our towel GSM guide explains what the weight numbers mean.

Colour

White shows makeup, sunscreen and skincare marks straight away, which some people like because it tells them when to change the towel. Darker shades hide these marks. Neither is more hygienic; what matters is how often you wash it.

How often should you change your face towel?

There is no official rule, but these are sensible general habits:

  • After one or two uses if you wear makeup or sunscreen, use skincare products, or have oily or breakout-prone skin.
  • Every two to three days at most for everyone else, and sooner in humid weather.
  • Straight away if it smells musty, feels slimy, or stayed damp overnight.

The easiest system is to keep several small towels in rotation, so a fresh one is always ready. Some people with breakout-prone skin use a fresh towel every time, or a clean paper towel, for the same reason.

How to dry your face without irritating your skin

  1. Pat, do not rub. Press the towel gently against your skin. Rubbing adds friction that can leave sensitive skin red.
  2. Leave your skin slightly damp if you use a moisturiser; many people apply it before the skin is fully dry.
  3. Use a clean section. Fold the towel so you are not pressing yesterday's cream back onto your face.
  4. Hang it open to dry. Spread it on a rail rather than bunching it on a hook, and move it somewhere airy if your bathroom has no window.
  5. Do not share it. It is a personal item, like a toothbrush.

Washing towels when you have sensitive skin

How you wash the towel you use on your face matters as much as which one you buy. A few general tips:

  • Wash new towels once before first use to remove loose fibres (lint) and factory finish.
  • Use a mild, fragrance-free detergent if scented products bother you, and do not overdose it. Extra detergent stays in the loops.
  • Skip fabric softener. It coats the loops, makes the towel less absorbent, and its fragrance can bother some people.
  • Add an extra rinse if your water is hard or the towel still feels soapy.
  • Dry it in the shade or indoors with good airflow. Harsh sun fades colour and can leave towels stiff.

For the full routine, see how to wash towels so they stay soft. The same thinking applies to your bed: your pillowcase touches your face for hours every night, which we cover in choosing bedsheets for sensitive skin.

If you have a rash, breakouts that will not settle, eczema or a suspected allergy, please see a doctor or dermatologist. A clean towel is a good habit, but it is not a treatment.

Face towel options at Home Living

To be clear, we do not sell face towels or hand towels. Home Living sells one towel product, a 2-piece cotton bath towel set with a medium towel (30 x 60) and a large towel (30 x 90), made for bath and everyday use. For your face, a small, soft cotton towel you keep only for your face and wash often is the thing that matters most.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a hand towel as a face towel?

Yes. A hand towel makes a comfortable face towel because it also covers your neck and hairline. Just keep it for your face only, not the one hanging by the sink that the whole family uses for their hands.

Is a face towel the same as a washcloth?

They are often the same size, and the names are used loosely. A washcloth is usually used wet, to wash the face or body, while a face towel is used to dry it. It is cleaner to keep a separate one for each job.

Is it better to let my face air-dry?

Some people let their face air-dry to avoid any friction, and that is fine. Gently patting with a clean towel is quicker and gentle enough for most skin. Do whichever suits you.

What colour face towel is best?

It is a personal choice. White shows stains, so you know when to change it; grey or charcoal hides makeup marks. Wash it often whatever the colour.
